 What I Know

I know this without reflection
But sometimes it’s much easier to forget than to face
How lines merge and split and dissipate over water
How lucky I should feel
I do not
I know that memories should be left in the place where we found them
Lovers are easier made than friends
I know that I prefer circles to squares
And secrets to full disclosure
I like the way we intersect
The way mountains form valleys
The way the sun pushes shadows from her wake
For us time creases our eyes
And fills hollow nights with deep meaning and fantasy
Pieces that do not
Or never will
I know this without reflection
Before the dive that penetrated my trust in man
There was
And you did so kindly
I like the way conversations make silence possible
That something so peaceful can
Before and after
My tongue
Over
The past makes for precious fodder
And disposable gestures
I can’t remember the last time you looked at me that way
Or held my hand
I know that I chose life over self-sacrifice
And I’m sorry
I like the way we collide but I abhor the collision
I know that certain clocks should never be touched
That it is possible to both love and hate
Fences.

 Heroes

This morning I received the following quote from my brother:

"Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can't help but cry. I mean I'd love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff."
--Mariah Carey

I can’t think of anyone more inspiring than Mariah Carey so I’d like to dedicate this entire day to her. She has played such an instrumental role in shaping who I am today. I’d just like to take this opportunity to say: "hey Mariah – thanks. thanks for everything."  Find a picture of her on the internet or pick up one of her albums and stare at it. Quietly from the depths of your heart whisper thank you.

Please keep those forwards coming people. I'm running out of material here.

 Mute Rhapsody

The winter has frozen my tongue
It lays limp like a dead fish in my mouth
I haven’t had much to say these days.

I let my hands do the talking
Carving castles out of cardboard hearts
Paper dolls that bite when you cut them
All this under the park bench
Where I last saw you
I haven’t had much to say these days.

My eyes turn gray and blink
Green again black
A stone drops in the water
And feels something it won’t ever admit to.

Brush my hair, brush my teeth, brush the world off
With the shrug of one pink shoulder
My castle collapses at the shore
and I stare at the woman who stares back at me.

Hands lay idol on her sunken chest
My voicebox empties itself in the wind
Fish flounder and rock my soul to sleep
I haven’t had much to say.

 Carl Sandburg's Answer

You have spoken the answer.
A child searches far sometimes
Into the red dust
On a dark rose leaf
And so you have gone far
For the answer is:
Silence.

 All Smiles

I have been accused of writing nothing but depressing lately...One has to wonder what there is to write about when one is not depressed. Failed relationships and hardships fuel my creativity. Obstacles become blessings in disguise…..renewed creative urges, stacks of manuscripts, paintings, ideas and late night coffee drinking sessions. The irony of these accusations is that I am not an unhappy person, I just like to exploit the bad times for artistic purposes. Ha!
